Everything began just ten years ago when the current owners, great lovers of history and old buildings, were charmed by the château of la Groirie in the Sarthe department, near Le Mans. The classical architecture of this historic monument exhibits an elegance befitting the 18th century, preserved in its spacious green setting. For some ten years now, the château and all its annexes (orangery, dovecote, chapel, guest wing transformed into a prestige hotel, and more) have been subjected to high quality restoration of both the exterior (roofs, façade restoration, etc.) and the interior, where the salons are listed as historic monuments.
La Groirie forms a whole, comprising the château-museum, the rooms, the park and other elements. This is why we want to offer the guests staying at our hotel a chance to visit a part of the château.
The visit begins outside, with a perusal of the château architecture, and continues as we enter the stairwell and wander through the ground floor museum’s connecting rooms, which are listed as historic monuments.
These rooms, with their classical “enfilade and lanterne” design of aligned doors and windows, are typical of the architecture of this period, and have been restored in the spirit of the 18th century, providing a backdrop to the elegance of the French lifestyle.
The visit continues with a stroll around the English style landscaped park. Here you will find the beautiful rose garden (with more than 400 varieties of roses) which, when the flowers are in bloom (June and July), will offer you a moment to take in the colours and perfumes that will linger long in the memory when you think of la Groirie.
The interior of the château can be visited subject to advance booking, and provided that the owners are present.
Depending on your desires and your curiosity, the mysteries of all our rooms, each one steeped in a unique and refined ambiance, are there for you to discover.
